» Studio Lighting Course offered.
In response to a lot of emails and flickr requests I am going to run another Lighting Course which I am pretty excited about, you don’t have to have used any flash lighting before just be enthusiastic about making great images.
If you are interested, or know anyone else that may be please pass on the details.
I can give an option of an one day Beginner course or a two day Intensive Course. Both options will cover the basics of Studio Lighting- but this is not, definitely not a Glamour session.
This class is based on what I wish someone had shown me when I first started studio strobe use. I have included some pics below just so you can see what sort of style etc I lean towards.
Studio Lighting.
Kit available-
4x Bowens 500W esprit monoblocs, standard softbox, 2m portrait softbox, umbrellas, gels etc.
All skills will be based around a simple effective lighting set-up, in this case Bowens 500w strobes (x2), soft box, umbrella plus lastolite reflectors. It is aimed at those with little or no experience of using studio strobe so dont worry if you have no idea what those terms mean.
On the One day course the morning would be spent explaining the equipment, the benefits and drawbacks of different types of lighting. Although this is a beginner level, almost every studio setup on my site is shot with this equipment, and only one in 3 shoots have I had to resort to three or more Bowens heads- but you will learn enough to understand how to incorporate as many heads as you need. I will explain lighting techniques and ratios, but in a practical not textbook approach. The aim is to take the fear away from studio work, you dont need to be technically minded to get the best from your images.
The second half of the day will involve an experienced model, who we will shoot in several different set-ups, using the knowledge explained in the morning. This should be a fun and interesting course, with out being too complicated for anyone just beginning to consider strobe lighting. We will also, if we have time, demonstrate the use of gels/constant lighting and on-off camera flash. Throughout the afternoon session there will be opportunities to review your images of the model and critique them.
Everyone on the day would need experience of and to bring an digital slr that has a sync cord option to allow you to trigger the flash heads- please check your camera online if you have any worries of its compatibility. (all other equipment is provided).
On the two day course we will take the ideas further and look at refining your image, and introducing more complex lighting set-ups, but the majority of the second day will be practical allowing you to shoot your own ideas with a model with extra time for critique.
If you are a beginner or have used studio lighting before then these courses should be of some benefit to you.
All courses will be based in Brighton, I can also provide a One or Two day Photoshop retouching course and preparing your images for Print and exhibition if you are interested.
I aim to keep the prices low so that all ages and levels can come along, so the one day course will be £90 and £160 for the 2 day, but this will be dependant on numbers. The last people that went through the course seemed to enjoy it, so please sign up or get in touch.
If you have any queries or want to book please use the contact form on this site, with subject matter Lighting and the type of course you are interested in, also dates that you are free, ideally weekends but I can do weekdays sessions as well. If you would prefer 1:1 tuition then let me know, and I can tailor a package for you….
Thanks everyone, I will get back to my usual ranting posts soon……

Mate but you’re rubbish? I can see the flashes in at least two of those pictures, you didn’t even manage to get them out the frame! If I was you, I’d get a fookin’ great dog and a rope ..!
Right, well that’s my useful input, now for my tirade of abuse …

I am interested in a two day intensive course, to learn the basics. I would like to be able to do my own shoots, and this seems the perfect solution to get me statred.
You’ll see that I have only a few potraiture shotso on my site, and wish to learn these essential skills to radicaklly expand further. Studio lighting looks a mine field without expert tuition. that’s where you step in….?
Please reply with details/options for consideration. I woould be able to week days or week-ends or a combination might be better?
Thanks
Simon

Hi,
I am interested in a 1 to 1 course. I already have a Bowens 500 stobe lighting kit, but have hardly used it due to lack of confidence, time and space.
Let me know if you think you can help.
